CURSO SOBRE WAGNER EN ESCOCIA

'The Young Wagner: his first three operas' - Residential Course 14-17 September 2015

Following his excellent study course on Wagner’s last opera, Parsifal, in September 2014, Derek Watson B.Mus. LRAM will return to the beginning of Wagner’s operatic career in a residential course on The Young Wagner in the pleasant and comfortable surroundings of Gartmore House.
This course will consider the early life and music of Richard Wagner, taking his story to 1842 when the 29-year-old had his first success with Rienzi, the Last of the Tribunes [after Bulwer-Lytton].  Along the way we'll look at highlights of Die Feen [The Fairies, after Gozzi] and Das Liebesverbot [The Ban on Love, after Shakespeare].  The influences of German Romantic, Italian, and French grand opera, together with literature, history and fairy tales, all combine in the melting pot from which the composer continued to draw in all his later dramas.  For this reason each of the first three operas is of fascination in itself, and all contain much enjoyable and beautiful music.  Sessions will be illustrated with visual material, musical examples and recorded extracts.
Course description
The course will start at 4pm on Monday 14th September 2015 with the first teaching session, followed by dinner and a second teaching session, and finish on Thursday 17th September 2015 after lunch at 13.00 (with two teaching sessions that morning). This is a new pattern for the course to maximise our time at Gartmore and minimise your costs.
The detailed programme and information about reading material, etc.  will be sent out nearer the time but please book now to ensure your place.
